More Frequently Asked DMARC Questions
What is a DMARC record check?
DMARC allows receiving mail servers to verify alignment between the domain names in the “header from” and “envelope from” fields of an email using SPF authentication, as well as between the “header from” domain name and the “d= domain name” in the DKIM signature. If an email fails both SPF and DKIM authentication and alignment, the receiving mail server can check the sender’s DMARC policy to decide whether to accept, block, or quarantine the email.
Why are DMARC reports important?
DMARC Aggregate (RUA) reports include the alignment status of SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. These reports provide information about messages sent on behalf of a specific domain. They are essential for gaining insights into email channels that send emails on behalf of a domain. With this information, DMARC deployment specialists can identify which sending sources are legitimate and which may be malicious.
What is a DMARC record?
A DMARC record is a DNS TXT record published in a domain’s DNS database. It instructs receiving mail servers on how to handle messages that fail SPF and/or DKIM authentication. A DMARC policy can specify that unauthenticated messages be quarantined, blocked, or delivered to the recipient. Additionally, a DMARC record provides feedback to the domain owner about which messages pass or fail authentication and the reasons why.

To implement DMARC, organizations require a valid DMARC record. A DMARC record check tool displays and verifies an organization’s DMARC record to ensure its validity. Mimecast provides a free DMARC record check service that tests, parses, and displays the DMARC record along with additional information.
